Following is report in the periodical HaHed regarding an attempt by Chief R' Hermann Adler to have the ban against secular studies (see note 6) rescinded. R Adler was most likely motivated to protect the honor of Ferdinand Rothschild , who founded one of the banned schols in honor of his wife Evelina:
