What rishon gave a closer reading to the text than the Sha'agas Aryeh/Turei Even? The point is certainly well made with respect to the Briskers, though.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8358603577059630653.post-47170573657268594962008-09-25T13:44:00.000-04:002008-09-25T13:44:00.000-04:00The Roshei Shearim (Kiddushin, Bava Kamma) provide...The Roshei Shearim (Kiddushin, Bava Kamma) provides the same type of rationale as R' Yaakov. He agrees that it is not the best way. I do not see college as much of a competition for todays Yeshiva students.

David, Halivni is referring to more then just textual emednations (see the examples he cites in PvD). (On manuscripts - see the very interesting statement of Y. Elman - "The world before the Genizah" in relation to the Yerushalmi)

The Rishonim also made emednations w/o manuscripts as evidenced by Rabbenu Tam's famous letter to R' Meshullam (IIRC).

Actually, I would like to see what an expert wuld have to say on the popular Oz V' Hadar's emednations - it seems to be a tremendous confusion of manuscript emendations and logical emendations from some (not particulalry critical) scholars.Wolf2191https://www.blogger.com/profile/13577870680689849400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8358603577059630653.post-39897489885833339482008-09-25T03:40:00.000-04:002008-09-25T03:40:00.000-04:00>While the Rishonim analysed the texts in a ver...>While the Rishonim analysed the texts in a very critical manner (as anyone can see by the quotations in the works of Prof.'s Halivni and Friedman), later generation worked "behind the text"

I believe that the main reason for that lack of textual analysis is the dearth of manuscripts. As we know all our shas is based on two manuscripts that survived the great medieval burning of sifrei kodesh. The rishonim had many more texts available for comparison, as Rambam in Milvah ve loveh and elsewhere writes and Ramban many times refers to sifrei sfarad hameduyakim (as do other Rishonim and their contemporaries). We are therefore restricted to the texts reported by the Rishonim and the texts we have which is quite monolithic but suspect. I also believe that this is one of the main reasons later posskim dared not disagree with Rishonim cavalierly.David Guttmannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07668302013143561290noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8358603577059630653.post-72000317470504078152008-09-25T00:25:00.000-04:002008-09-25T00:25:00.000-04:00The Roshi Shearim discusses our method in an intro...The Roshi Shearim discusses our method in an introduction to one of his sefarim.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
